This is an article by Anna over at The Imagination Tree that speaks to the latest fad of Elf on the Shelf and why some of us parents reject the idea of a “spy for Santa”. Personally in our household we teach that Santa is the spirit of giving and thus he exists in the heart of everyone. Santa can never die or be discovered to be “not real” because every person has the capacity to give. I love Anna’s article and completely agree.
Create a new tradition for Christmas with the Kindness Elves, an alternative to the popular Elf on the Shelf idea, and place the focus instead on positive, character-building activities for kids. Teaching love, kindness and gratitude with a hope to raise kids who move away from the “entitlement” attitude which pervades our modern generation.
I would even say if you are taking the time to prepare all of this for your child why not go one step further and make an elf doll yourself? A simple flower fairy might be nice for your little girls or a clothes pin elf or a small acorn gnome. Really the possibilities are as endless and creative as your unique family.
