Selling Online

There are lots of places you can sell your wares online. It kind of depends on what your product is and who is your target market as to where you might want to sell it.

If you’re into used goods then the local classifieds might suffice. Free online versions such as Craigslist and Kijiji are in most major cities. In a few simple steps you can publish your item online in the form of a classified ad complete with pictures and as much or as little description as you like.
If you are trying to reel in the bigger fish because you have a hot item then perhaps eBay is where you want to list your wares.

If your product is handmade or handcrafted then your local farmers market is a good place to check out so that you can be face to face with your local buyers. A quick google search of your city and ‘farmers market’ should put you in touch with the market nearest to you.
Another option is to sign up for Etsy. A new marketplace specializing in handmade and now vintage items. Catering to the niche market of women and their kitch Etsy has quickly gained in popularity and recognition in the world of online marketplaces.

Here are three of the most important things to remember when you are selling anything online:

  • Track your time – in a notebook excel file somewhere keep a log of how much of your effort it is taking to unload this item. Then you can gauge whether or not it is worth it.
  • Cost Analysis – how much did you pay for the item? How much did it sell for? How long was it listed? Where was it listed? Did a similar item sell for more elsewhere? Why? In the world of marketing the mantra is Test Test Test.
  • Shipping – this can be the difference between nailing a sale and having your customer move on to the next one so go down to your local post office with your product and price it out. Get it right and have a system in place so that you look professional to your customers.

As with any business keeping track of what you are doing and how it is working is crucial to your success. So get out your notebook and test, test, test.
