Child Care Program

Mixed Age Childcare inspired by Waldorf Education

A warm home-like childcare program for children 3-5 years old

“Children who live in an atmosphere of love and warmth, and who have around them truly good examples to imitate, are living in their proper element.”
—Rudolf Steiner, The Education of the Child

Waldkindergarten: The forest nursery school or natural nursery school is a form of the nursery school , which originates from Scandinavia

Our daily activities follow the pedagogical principles of age appropriate and rhythmical activities with increased variety, depth, and complexity. Our daily activities focus on rhythm, language development through artistic expression, development of social skills, and encompass free play, puppet shows and story telling, cooking and baking, singing and movement games, circle time and painting.

Our work with young children unfolds according to the natural rhythm of the week and the seasons, celebrations of festivals and cycles of stories and verses. The foundation of experiences which our classroom activities are formed around are:

  • love and warmth
  • an environment that nourishes the senses
  • creative and artistic experiences
  • meaningful adult activity to be imitated
  • free, imaginative play
  • protection of the forces of childhood
  • gratitude, reverence, and wonder
  • joy, humor, and happiness
  • adult caregivers pursuing a path of inner development

Weekly Rhythm & Food

Each day we prepare snack as a group in the classroom. We encourage parents to send along an additional snack in case their child has an excellent appetite however we strongly encourage children to share a meals together as this helps create a feeling of community we believe is very important to their social emotional development.

Snack is served with the highest quality whole grass-fed milk and seasonal fruit (most often apples!). All of our grains are organic and where possible locally sourced.

Monday – Rice (brown)
Tuesday – Barley (whole grains unprocessed & soaked)
Wednesday – Millet
Thursday – Rye (whole grains unprocessed & soaked)
Friday – Oats (whole grains unprocessed & soaked)

We do understand that many children these days have food in tolerances. If your child is unable to digest dairy we request that you provide a sugar free substitute such as coconut, almond or rice. While whole soaked grains are extremely low in gluten we are aware that even the smallest amount can wreak havoc on some people’s digestive systems you are welcome to provide an alternative grain, preferably warm, such as quinoa, rice or millet.

The daily routine of the classroom remains the same day to day or week to week. In early childhood we believe children do best when they feel safe and secure in the rhythm of daily life.

On Wednesdays we make whole wheat bread with the children  which we share in the afternoon with a bit of butter and serve raspberry tea sweetened with honey. In the summer months when it is too hot to eat bread we give the children popsicles made with juice made from local fruit such as cherries, apricots and grapes.
